Slowly, the sounds of the Council and the crew dimmed, then disappeared altogether. Lydan sat crossed-legged upon the sand with his face to the ocean and the warm afternoon sun. The trees behind him swayed and rustled in the wind as the scent of cooking food, raw wood, and the sea's brine filled his nostrils. Lydan found stillness in his breath, releasing his being from his physical form. His brow furrowed and slowly, the color of fresh cream spread across his mind, cream and gold, softness and light.

There ye are, my dear, my love. 'Tis been so long since I've held you close, dear wife, but your beauty is always with me. I see your golden hair flying out behind you as you frolic in the woods of our dell. I see your eyes as they glow in the delight of the day. I see what you see, the dell alive with the spring day, the birds in flight, the butterflies and bees hovering from one blossom to another. But now you must see what I see. You must be here with me, with my spirit.

He saw Zelia stop her play. He saw her turn her head to the sun and the Stars hiding behind its brightness and knew she came to him, that they had joined, spiritually and mentally. Time passed uncounted as he existed in the two planes. The pictures rose up in his mind with the smallest effort. First, he saw the Freedom in pieces on the shore and then the Council and the surviving crew members. He visualized Witon's map, the one showing the land they'd all dreamed about. There stood Belamay, smiling, as she always seemed to be, opening the door he willed Zelia to knock upon. Lydan brought these two spiritual representations to the shipyard and helped them discuss the voyage with the captain. With a final push of empathic effort, he watched as the new vessel and its trekkers of creatures launched itself to him and their new world. Zelia stood on the bow and, as the vessel began its journey, she turned to the eye of Lydan's mind and blew him a kiss. With this mental picture, Lydan's spiritual connection ceased and he slumped onto the sand, exhausted.

He heard the sounds of this earthly reality first; people talking, crude spoons tinkling against dented plate. He opened one eye and saw a moonless sky, the darkness alive with stars.

“'Tis good, brother?”

Lydan turned to the voice and found Nevod, eating his evening meal as he sat on the ground next to Lydan.

“'Tis very good,” Lydan answered with a smile. He sat up, took the plate of food from his brother's hands, and began devouring the remaining food.

Nevod leaned over, planted a kiss on his brother's forehead, and set off for another trencher of food.
